An ICONCLASS Handbook
Between 1973 and 1985 a group of art historians of the University of Leiden prepared the final publication of H. van de Waal's iconclass. An iconographic classification system. Although the system is now widely used in many documentation projects and by art historians and cultural historians all over the world, a handbook on iconclass and its use was still lacking.
Now, almost ten years after the final publication, FOLEOR Publishers is pleased to present the first comprehensive handbook on iconographic indexing and Iconclass:

Iconography – Indexing – ICONCLASS
A  Handbook

The handbook was written by Roelof van Straten, iconographer, one of the founding editors of Iconclass and author of the iconclass Indexes series. In the handbook, the author deals, among other things, with the following themes:

Te theory of Iconography
(critical discussion and revision of Panofsky's theory)
the actual task of the iconographic indexer

Iconclass
  • a comprehensive description of the System
  • the Bibliography and the Alphabetical Index
  • the history of Iconclass
  • use of the System for iconographic research

Subject indexing with Iconclass
Detailed information on the use of many codes, practical examples, the functioning of the system, etc.

Iconclass problems

Furthermore, the book comprises a comprehensive list of corrections and new notations (code-numbers) of Iconclass, a bibliography of publications on Iconclass, and an alphabetical list of new Iconclass terms.

This Iconclass handbook is an important addition to the original series of 17-volumes, and should certainly be available in every major art-historical institute.
